We encourage tourists to visit Africa as their contribution to POVERTY REDUCTION especially at the local level by Africans getting benefits from tourism.Tourism is one of the leading "ready" exports and foreign exchange earners for most African countries. But almost 85% on money tourism earnings goes back to foreign investors or countries of origin of the tourists because most hotels, travel agencies, airlines lodges, ranches, villas and others are foreign owned. Tourism revenue to Africa is far bigger than foreign aid to Africa! Africa's share of global tourism revenues according to the United Nations is 3.6% and tourism accounts for more than 11% of Africa's GDP. Cultural tourism(homestay being part of it) accounts for 5% of global tourism and is growing at the rate of 20-30% per year according to World Tourism Organisation. Homestay benefits the locals where the tourists LIVE,STUDY and do voluntary WORK. It is a pity that most governments and tourism institutions do not grasp this concept of locals benefitting from tourism. They are only interested in job creation , investment and tax payment as the communities along the tourist circuits live in abject poverty! Tourism must benefit the tourist and the locals. That is why we pioneer and champion homestay tourism ,cultural immersion and voluntary work concepts to help the communities along tourist circuits with homestay fees(paid to hosts),cross-cultural learning(how much of one's culture or heritage can a tourist learn in a hotel compared with staying with an African family?) and other community projects where guests volunteer.

  • Before your date of arrival in Africa we will arrange for a family to host you for the period you will be staying in the continent. We will introduce you to the family so that you can start communication before your date of arrival. You will have a chance to exchange information about each other and maybe exchange photos too. This will help you to get to know each other.

We will request the family to have a separate room for you in their house. We will personally inspect the accommodation arrangements that the family will make for you .We will also ensure that the family can be able to offer the minimum facilities for your comfortable living and be able to cater for those personal requests that you will make.

On the date of your arrival , we will pick you from the airport and drive you to the home of your host. If the family will prefer it, they will themselves pick you from the airport. You will come into the continent on a tourist visa. Before your departure from your country, please make sure that you have the necessary insurance cover for the period of your stay in Africa.

When finding you a family to host you, security consideration will be of paramount importance .However, you will be required to observe some basic family rules, like the latest time you can come into the house. This is for the sake of your security and the security of the family too.

You are required to use the phone to keep in contact with us and the host family. You will return the cell-phone to us on your date of departure. You will also be free to visit our office any time you wish and use the internet and email service for free for up to 2 hours every day we are open. Our office remains open from 8.00 am to 7pm all days except Sundays.

Should you feel uncomfortable with your stay in your host’s house, you are required to inform us immediately so that we can change the host for you. If need be, we will immediately move you to a guesthouse or hotel before we find you another family to host you.

While you live with the host family, you will be required to each week give the family a small amount as your contribution for food and accommodation.
Specific amount of your weekly contribution will be notified to you once you have declared your interest.

Am from Arusha and I read an article in the paper on your interest to start homestays in Tanzania we do have vilage or cultural tourism here in arusha but it has not advanced much for people are yet to catch on we have on several occasions hosted people or students at our houes in our village for very little money as these tourist visit our village to volunteer at building schools or helping at orphanages
It has been a desire of mine to host more toutists at our village not only in my home but with our neighbours for we also live in a half modern half Boma type of existence and I'd encourage you not to mind when folks build modern facilities they have traditions deeply rooted in their hearts as in the way of dress or the sort of food they eat the language dance weddings death ceremonies and all sorts of traditions that we still have as in our herbal medicines and other sort of stuff that is hard to let go off even our hospitality and friendly nature of peace even in our differences of religion leaves an impact on tourists even our respect of elders is something for them to learn from us so back to my point if you are interested to know more or to send people out here just ask for Stella Nico
"I was listening to your project on the Capital FM online radio from the USA on June 24,2006.I have never thought host family could work in Africa. Thanks to you.Keep up the good work!"
Sincerely,
Vivian Ochieng
I cant believe this website exists!!! This sounds like my life
ambition come true!! it really really really does- and its taken me about 4 weeks
of internet searching to find it! i would absolutely adore to take part in this, and would literally be willing to move heaven and earth to do so! the only slight problem may be that as a student, having to work over the
summer, I can only travel for two weeks between 27th Aug-25th Sept.Is there any way whatsoever that i could take part in this program?

I have met tourist who would really want to interact with locals but they are so shy. Men are OK but ladies very funny. The problem is whe you fail to meet and interact with people you end up drinking so much becuase you know only the bar. I have seen people leave Kenya more durnkards than they were when they came. There is a new concept of tourist living with locals and they eat, sleep in their home/village. Some find work as volunteer in medicine, teaching etc. This is very cheap becuase what you get to pay is 10-20 dollars for you up keep. Visit www.africanhomestay.net for more details.

This way also helps the locals financially becuase most of the money that go to hotels do not help the local even the government does not make the roads and help the locals. It helps people find homes to stay and we get so many people from all over the world mostly students and those who cannot afford an expensive safari
